Herb Planters
Adding a collection of herb planters to a sunshine-filled window sill is both fun and practical. Some of the most popular herbs grown inside the home, are added to recipes for soups, meals, and crafts such as soap. This is a popular way to add fresh scents and flavors during winter months when fresh herbs are not available in a store.
Talk to folks at a local plant nursery or garden clubs, to discover the most popular herbs grown in your area. Review the uses of each one to determine what types of plants will grow best in your home. The size or planter may range from six inches to a foot deep. A variety of herbs can share the same bed of potting in a container.
Make sure that a proper mixture of soil and fertilizer is used. It is important that your mix drains easily so that your plants to not become over-watered. A south or southwest exposed window is best to ensure at least 4-6 hours of sunlight per day to ensure that plants receive the vitamins and nutrients required from sunlight.
Start with about three inches of soil for best results, and add the selected seeds. Once they are positioned, it is time to add more soil to get within an inch or two of the top of the container. The idea is to have some room for watering your seedlings. Never over-water your plants because they will react badly.
Every three to four weeks it may be necessary to add a bit of fertilizer that is specifically formulated for the plants you are growing. Check for soil-less specific mixtures to use in your pots so that you do not have any problems with bad soil. Discuss the options for growing plants with experienced growers or store owners.
You may begin plucking leaves from your herbs when you see evidence of new growth. Many growers favor mint, lavender, basil, and chives for their multiple uses. Parsley and thyme are highly suited to a window garden because they are used in many recipes. It is possible to use artificial lights to grow planter herbs. Make sure you get the fluorescent lights recommended for this purpose and that they are positioned about a foot and a half above the plants.
Do not over manicure your herbs. To achieve a healthy growth in the container, it is wise not pluck more than one third of the plant at any time. This is the best way to create a healthy planter in your home. It may be worth it to try out one or more of the many planters that come with herbs included.
